Timing is key…

22 02 2010

I realized that I’d been putting off working on the animation because I wanted to address the issue of timing my classmates brought up last friday: namely, I restored the master tempo to its original 120 bpm, and fixed minor timings in word animations (see the current version with crappy built-in audio here, but turn your volume down—it’s loud).  The music, up until tonight, wasn’t finished.  So, I sat myself down in GarageBand and finished recording everything.  I re-recorded the melody and baseline, determined the bridge and intro, and modified and finished the descant.  All told, it’s three tracks of piano some spliced together, and it plays very loudly instead of very quietly, which I consider a moderate improvement.  I wish I could make it sound like it does in my thoughts—I hear amazing sounds in my head but can’t get them out into daylight.  I’m satisfied with it but not enchanted.  I’m not sure I have the skill with keyboard-driven software instruments to enchant myself.  Volunteers? :)  No, seriously, I would love a cover of this.  I’d also love a new sewing machine, digital slr camera, and a sexy red foreign sports car, for the record.  And a kitten.

Code-wise, I’m looking at ways to combine all the circles into one MovieClip object, which I can then use as a mask.  I’m also trying to make things work with classes and packages, as it’s much cleaner.  I’m not sure where I want to put the socket (in its own class, with methods to talk to other classes; or in the main class).  I’ve discovered that, no matter the screen size or the number of circles, the flash implementation of the processing app starts to slow way down.  Ugh.  Distressing, particularly as I’m not sure if I can find an alternative.  I need to find out how to make Processing and Flash talk over the web, not just over my computer’s local ports.  That could be difficult.

I’m reading “Postmodern media culture” by Jonathan Bignell, which is turning out to be an interesting and informative read.  I’m also beginning to panic about getting everything done by the end of this term, but I’ll just keep working, staying up later and forcing myself to get up earlier as the term progresses.  I keep thinking, “I can do this, I can do this, I will not melt into a puddle of ectoplasm and stain the peculiar blue tiled carpet in my room…”  I went to Fencing, but my right ankle (specifically, the muscle/tendon that runs along the outside of the shinbone and serves to lifts your foot up/flex it toward your leg) burns when I try to step forward.  Having decided that I should not keep stressing it when it hurts so much, I skipped out after footwork, showered, ate dinner, and got to work.  Whee.  People were playing video games in the lounge as I went by, and later they watched a movie (The Devil Wears Prada).  If I’m not careful, I’ll pick up another fun book, and then where will I be?

Transitions and text (and the Olympics, of course!)

15 02 2010

Okay, I did get a lot of work done yesterday, but I didn’t post because I was watching figure skating on NBC’s olympics coverage (wow; some painful falls!).  I also forgot to post a link to the valentine I made a while ago and posted yesterday.  Then I did more work this morning; the progress animation for today will cover both days of work.  I plan to eat dinner early, go to Fencing Club, and then possibly leave a bit early so I can rush through my shower and beg that the TV in the lounge be tuned to channel 3 for the second installment of pairs figure skating!  Yay!  If not, I will watch the clips online…  And speaking of watching things online, I’m on episode 22 of Cowboy Bebop (that’s “Cowboy Funk,” the one with the Teddy Bomber and that annoying dude with the horse whose name happily escapes me).

Transitions: how I go from image to image, or animation to animation.  It varies; I’ve used lots of fades and zooms, and a few animated changes (line four’s eye reflection turns into line five’s silhouette); the animations take more work, but I really like the results, so I hope to do more of those.  Likewise coloring; monochrome gives a nice effect, but the mood of the poem/song fluctuates between dark (minor key, verses) and light (major key, chorus), so I’m using more color for the chorus segments.  See, it all makes sense, Subconscious!  I told you it would!

Text: I’m doing a handwritten style for the personal, intimate feel and flexibility it gives me; I usually do several draft letterings and pick my favorite to use (heh; a typo made that “sue” for a moment).  They writing also reflects the mood to a degree, but the style of the scene/image/animation is a stronger influence.  I’m doing mostly static type, so that the animated type of certain sections stands out more (line five, particularly, as well as forthcoming lines six and eight).  It reads a bit like a picture book at the moment; the type is wavering between being like a static block of text and a fully integrated element of the image.  At this point, I’m not sure where it will go eventually, but I’m excited to find out.

Go USA!  Make me proud! *insert a rare instance of patriotic fervor in yours truly*

Went to the library today and got a ton of books, which I’ll be reading for my thesis research.  Thank god I had the brilliant idea of strapping the heavy bag to my bike rack instead of hanging it from one handlebar comme d’habitude—it made steering much easier!  Also got books on Flash that deal at least in part with XML, in hopes of making Flash and Processing speak to each other.  Not sure if I want to try to explore VVVV, as it’s PC only, but with luck I’ll be able to find out soon whether Processing can do what I need it to, or whether I need to go hang out in a PC lab (oh, goody).  Have been thinking up more visuals, both static and roto’d from footage, trying to piece together a cohesive narrative from the text I’m working from.  (Come to think of it, I should post that text, as well as some other informational things about my thesis project, on this blog, so that people know just what the heck I am talking about sometimes!)  Off to go eat dinner (I am starving)!  Not sure if I’ll try to make fencing club tonight or just work on stuff…
